UPDATED Photo Release: In Brooklyn and at JP Morgan Chase & Co Housing Summit, HUD Secretary Spotlights Affordable Housing Investments and Need for Public Private Partnership
Secretary Marcia L. Fudge toured affordable senior housing alongside Rep. Yvette Clarke (D-NY), visited Nehemiah Spring Creek and spoke to bankers at the JPMorgan Chase Housing Finance Summit
WASHINGTON – U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development Secretary Marcia L. Fudge visited New York City on November 28 and 29, where she was joined by Congresswoman Yvette Clark to visit a senior housing community that represents a joint venture with a faith-based institution focused on increasing the supply of affordable housing. The property has 100 apartment units for low-income seniors, including a large Chinese American immigrant population. HUD vouchers are used for 100% of the units.
The Secretary then visited Nehemiah Spring Creek with EBC and their partners to hear from stakeholders about the evolving role faith institutions and developers of color can play toward increasing the supply of affordable housing and homeownership opportunities for underserved communities. Nehemiah Spring Creek is a multiphase initiative that is transforming 45 acres of former wetlands into a modern and model suburban, mixed-income, smart-growth community that offers over 1,600 affordable apartment rentals and townhouse homeownership, as well as retail. The community includes public schools, family health and medical facilities, dining options, and human services. It is also near the Gateway Center, one of Brooklyn's newest shopping centers. The project received public and private investments and benefits from HUD resources for sustainability.
“In New York City, I toured local housing developments, met with residents, and spoke to leaders in housing finance,” said HUD Secretary Marcia L. Fudge. “To lower housing costs we must build more affordable housing and preserve the housing we have. Public private partnerships like the ones I saw in Brooklyn are promising steps forward.”
