DRUG FREE POSTER/ART CONTEST RULES

Download your STATE SPECIFIC instructions packet by clicking here.

  1. All Contestants submitting artwork MUST be a resident of a community that is currently a member of SAHMA.

  2. Entries are judged on the artist's ability to create a submission with a drug-free message that portrays the year's theme.
    Specifically judges will consider:
    • Interpretation of the Theme
    • Originality
    • Quality - Is it appealing to the eye?
    • Overall Artistic Ability - Does the artwork submission show some degree of creativity and skill for its age group?
    • Reproduction value - Will the colors/medium reproduce onto a calendar with quality and clarity?

  3. The five grade categories for children are based on the grade level the contestants have completed by June 2012:
    • Kindergarten - 1st Grade
    • 2nd Grade - 3rd Grade
    • 4th Grade - 6th Grade
    • 7th Grade - 9th Grade
    • 10th Grade - 12th Grade

  4. Elderly/Disabled participants are residents 55 and over who live in a SAHMA community. Special Needs participants are Residents of any age living in permanent supportive housing or an 811 community.

  5. Elderly/Disabled & Special Needs participants cannot be the grand prize winner on the state or national level but can win at other levels.

  6. While we encourage community activities to discuss the theme and contest rules, entries must be created by the individual without assistance.

  7. Artwork must be submitted on a 22 in. x 28 in. poster board or heavy art paper (portrait or landscape layouts accepted).

  8. Any medium may be used (paint, crayons, colored pencils, collage, etc.) but must be protected against damage.

  9. Use of cartoon characters, product brands, logos, individual names or property names is not permitted.

  10. A Participant Information Form must be completed, legible and attached to the back, upper right-hand side, of each submission. **Incomplete forms will make submissions ineligible.** Elderly/Disabled & Special Needs forms do not require age, birthday, school or parent information.

  11. All posters submitted to the chairperson become the property of SAHMA and NAHMA, who have the right to use the art for publicity, publications and advertisements. Posters will not be returned.

  12. Complete the PARTICIPANT report and submit it with posters to your state's Drug Free Chairperson.

  13. All entries MUST be received by your state's Drug Free Chairperson no later than FRIDAY, JANUARY 6, 2012

  14. Call your Chairperson with any questions or concerns. Contact information for your state's chairperson can be found on your state specific contest instructions.

DON'T:

  • Procrastinate - get started planning NOW!
  • Forget the SAHMA deadline
  • Try to do it all yourself - get other employees and uninvolved residents to help out
  • Be afraid to ask for donations from local businesses
  • Forget the theme or misrepresent the rules or prizes
  • Waste time and money on poor planing
  • Give out the poster board until the final drawing session - use butcher block or practice paper
  • Provide the wrong size poster board
  • Allow names or information on the front of the poster
  • Expect entrants to finish in one day or less - allow practice sessions
  • Change anything on a participant's poster
  • Be critical of any participant's work or style
